EASTERN DIVISION PLAYOFF SUMMARY: The Navigators took their opening playoff series two games to one over the Sanford Mainers after they ultimately prevailed in a 7-6 win in Wednesday's decisive Game 3 to earn a match-up with the Gulls in this best-of-three series to decide the East. In Game 1 vs. Sanford back on Monday, Crayton Bare pitched a complete game shutout on Monday at Fraser, but Sanford evened things up with a 5-1 victory on Tuesday at Goodall Park. Newport had already swept the Laconia Muskrats prior to North Shore's Game 3 against Sanford, as Newport starter Tony Bucciferro earned the win in the first game of their series, going seven strong innings and allowing just two runs while scattering seven hits. Mark Appel was even better the following night, as he threw eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in Game 2 to close out the series.

LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The North Shore Navigators could not overcome a four-run first inning in a 5-4 loss last night to the Newport Gulls, who took Game 1 of their best two-of-three series at Cardines Field in NECBL playoff action. The Navigators now face a must-win scenario tonight in Game 2.

Down 5-2 in the sixth, the Navigators struck for two in the frame to make it a one-run game after an RBI single from Ben Waldrip and an RBI groundout by Garret Smith. But Newport reliever Gardner Leaver came on in relief of starter Pat Light and got Jason Banos to fly out with the bases loaded to end the inning. But from that point forward, the Gulls bullpen took over to shut down the Navs lineup, as the duo of John Farrell and Mike Francisco combined for two innings of relief with two strikeouts apiece, and Seth Simmons came on in the ninth inning for the save.

In the first, the Navigators got off to a shaky start defensively while starting pitcher Nolan Corr struggled with his control, and the Gulls took advantage by taking an early 4-0 lead before North Shore even recorded an out. After an infield single by Derek Legg to begin the frame, Dan Gamache singled through the right side and Brendon Kelliher reached on an error by shortstop Jack Mayfield to load the bases. Corr then proceeded to walk the next two before he hit Kevin Quaranto with a pitch, forcing in three runs without the benefit of a hit. Another run came in to score when Connor Harrell grounded into a double play.

Corr did settle down and allowed just one run over the next four innings. On the night, allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings to take the loss. Newport's Light went 5.1 innings to get the win. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits.

TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Michael Johnson (Dartmouth) gets his first playoff start tonight for the Navs after making eight starts during the regular season. Although his ERA is at 5.53 due to poor outings June 14 (five earned vs. New Bedford) and July 26 (six earned at Danbury), he dominated the Gulls in the regular season finale last Saturday here at Fraser Field. He struck out 10 and allowed just one run on two hits over five innings.

Opposing Johnson is Eric Eadington of Harvard University. He appeared in eight games during the regular season, but made only one start July 29 at New Bedford in a 5-3 win. Eadginton got the victory after allowing three runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings. In his seven relief outings, he's allowed just two runs over 10.2 innings for a 1.69 ERA.

SEASON SERIES: The Newport Gulls took four out of the six contests during their regular season series with the Navigators. The Gulls won the season opener 2-1 at Cardines Field on June 4, and they got a 4-1 victory June 13 at Fraser Field. However, the Navs did get a 7-6 win at home on June 27 and then shut out the Gulls three days later at Cardines.

But the Gulls took the final two games to close out the season series, and ultimately finished the regular season two games up on the Navigators to take first place in the final Eastern Division standings. The Gulls had a team doubleheader on the final day of the season, as they beat Laconia earlier in the day before traveling to Fraser Field, where they got another victory. In fact, they closed out the regular season with eight straight wins to clinch the division.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: In the Western Division, the (1) North Adams SteepleCats defeated the (2) Danbury Westerners 4-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-three series. Michael Williams homered on a three-hit day and knocked in both Danbury runs, but it was not enough as SteepleCats starter Stephen Rivera allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings of work. Rivera also struck out seven and walked just one.

Both teams advanced to the Western Division Finals despite the fact that both squads lost their respective Game 1's at home.

(4) The Keene Swamp Bats came to North Adams and left with a 2-1 win on Monday, much in part due to Game 1 starter Scott Firth, who allowed just one run over eight innings with seven strikeouts. Nonetheless, North Adams responded with a Game 2 road victory of their own on Tuesday with a 6-4 extra-inning victory at Keene. North Adams, who finished the regular season with the second-best record in the NECBL (26-16), proceeded to take the decisive third game, as starter G Knudson allowed three runs over seven innings of work in a 10-5 win to advance.

(3) Bristol also won on the road on Monday over Danbury, as Danbury starter Mike Hauschild was the tough-luck loser despite allowing just one earned run over 6.1 innings. Danbury did however respond with a road win of its own on Tuesday, defeating Bristol in a 5-3 win. Kevin Kilpatrick tossed 7.1 scoreless innings to get the victory.

Danbury got a great pitching performance from starter Sean Hagan in Game 3, who tossed a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win to advance to the next round.
