Gloucester varsity soccer players represented some of the most elite
soccer on the north shore on Monday night. However, they were fighting
from opposite sides of the pitch.

Gloucester Captains Kyle Grimaldi, Joe LaRocca and Paul D'Angelo
represented the Aztecs S.C. where Captain Devin Pleuler and GHS
teammate Rodrigo Pardo represented the S.F. Vikings on the opposite
side of the New England Soccer School pitch in Amesbury.

If this game was the classic hockey duel between the United States and
the Russians, the Aztecs S.C. were the United States and the S.F.
Vikings were the Russians. The Vikings had everything to lose and the
Aztecs had everything to gain. Though not having a gold medal at stake,
these two teams were fighting for the important eighth and final
invitation to the Massachusetts State Cup that is to be held on the
UMass Amherst campus in early June.

The match began with an unexpected goal when Bishop Fenwick star
Steven Blaisdel made his single defensive mistake of the game, which
led to Joe Alas of Salem scoring the first goal, providing Aztecs an
early 1-0 lead. The Vikings however, who had not this season came back
to win a game after conceding the first goal of the match, equalized
the score with a goal from Pingree forward Jesse Rose. Later in the
first half, a call against Devin Pleuler led to an
ensuing penalty kick for Aztecs, where Devin's fellow GHS captain Kyle
Grimaldi promptly buried in the right side of the net. Yet, the
Vikings settled down before half time and equalized the score again at
2-2.

The second half brought a different game; the Vikings scored and then
continued to increase their lead until the score read 6-2.

Despite gaining considerable momentum in the final few minutes, the
Aztecs S.C. could not find the desperately needed goals that would
equalize the score. The final score ended up at 6-4.

Congratulations to the participating north shore soccer stars for a
well-played match and good luck to the S.F. Vikings in the State Cup
early next month.

(Thanks to student correspondent Devin Pleuler)

Many of next year's GHS Boys Soccer players will be representing some
of the most elite soccer on the North Shore later this month. However,
they will be fighting from opposite sides of the pitch.

Captains Joe LaRocca, Paul D'Angelo and Kyle Grimaldi will be
representing the Aztecs S.C. Under-17 squad while they fight their
north shore rivals SF Vikings alongside GHS Captain Devin Pleuler and
fellow teammate Rodrigo Pardo.

The Aztecs (11th seed) will be trying to knock off the Division One SF
Vikings (6th Seed) for one of the few remaining invitations to the
Massachusetts State Cup held at UMass Amherst in early June.

To get to this point, Aztec had to knock off the Middlesex Phantoms
(2-0) at Gordon College last week. The SF Vikings however have not yet
played a qualifying match due to their first and second round bye.

All supporters of GHS soccer and it's players are invited to attend
this important game; it is currently scheduled for the New England
Soccer School (Amesbury Sports Park off Route 495) at 8:00 PM on May
22nd. For directions or more information, email
devinpleuler@gmail.com.
