PLAYOFF STRUCTURE: The Top-four teams from both the Eastern and Western Divisions qualify for the playoffs under the current NECBL postseason structure. Both divisional rounds as well as the NECBL championship series will all follow a best two-of-three format.

THE MATCH-UP: Headed into Game 1 of their three-game playoff series, the North Shore Navigators have the upper hand as the higher seed and own home field advantage against the Sanford Mainers. But it has been the Mainers who have had the upper hand all throughout the regular season, going 5-1 against the Navigators in 2010.

North Shore dropped a 4-1 loss to Sanford on June 10 amidst their six-game losing streak to begin the season, and the Mainers defeated the Navs again four days later 7-2. The Navigators responded with a 7-2 win of their own on June 28, but Sanford beat North Shore three times in a seven-day span in late July to easily take the regular season series.

Overall, Sanford lost five of its last eight and finished four games back of the division lead while the Navs won three of their final four games to earn the No. 2 seed. Sanford went 14-7 at home and just 9-12 on the road, while the Navigators were 13-8 at home and a league-best 12-9 on the road.

Neither Eastern team however could catch the Newport Gulls, who rung off eight straight wins to close out the regular season. Newport was only a half game up on North Shore headed into the last day of the season, but they beat Laconia in the first game of their team twinbill early Saturday afternoon to clinch the division. Had they lost, the regular season finale between the Gulls and the Navigators would have decided the division champ. Newport hosts Laconia tonight in Game 1 of their opening series.

THE STARTERS: Sanford starter Shane Davis finished the regular season 2-3 with a 2.66 ERA in seven starts for the Mainers. Unfortunately for North Shore, both of Davis's victories this summer came against the Navigators, and both took place at Fraser Field. He shut out the Navigators over six innings in a 4-1 win on June 10, and he more recently allowed just one run on three hits over 7.2 innings on July 21. Davis tied for the team lead in starts (7) and finished third on the team in innings pitched (41). Amazingly, he walked just four batters all season. Despite only registering two wins, Davis was a model of consistency all season. In fact, he posted a 2.65 ERA in 17 innings in three June starts and a 2.66 ERA over 23.2 innings in four July starts.

Navigators' starter Crayton Bare was an NECBL All-Star, pitching a perfect 1-2-3 inning at Newport in the annual event. On the season, he finished ninth in the league in ERA (1.98) and went 3-1 in nine games (eight starts). He posted a 1.65 ERA in the eight games he started. Ironically, much like how Davis's two wins came against North Shore, Bare's only loss of the season came against Sanford his last time out on July 27. He allowed three runs over five innings in the 5-1 loss. But in six of his previous seven starts, he went five innings and allowed only one run or less each time out. The only start in which he failed to go five innings came when a rain delay ended his outing after just two innings (no hits, no runs) on July 14 at Bristol. Opponents hit just .185 against Bare on the season – good for fourth overall in the league.

THE LINEUPS: The Mainers were led offensively this season by NECBL All-Stars Jim Schult (2 HR, 14 RBI) and Joe Wendle (2 HR, 15 RBI), as Schult hit .333 in 29 games and Wendle finished the regular season at .311 in a team-best 41 games. Michael Roth (2 HR, 13 RBI) was also key for Sanford, as he hit .310 in 17 games with a .969 OPS. As a team, Sanford finished eighth in the NECBL in team batting average (.247) and seventh in runs scored (181).

For the Navigators, Jason Banos hit .391 (34-for-87) from June 28 on, and finished the year third in the league overall in hitting at .348. He also hit a two-run homer in the All-Star Game on July 18, taking home MVP honors in the process. He had an eight-game hitting streak from July 7-20 in which he hit .467, and he also reached base safely in 20 straight games from June 16-July 20 which hitting .429 over that span.

Tyler Kuehl led the team and finished tied for third in the league in RBI (27) and also stole nine bases, and Braxton Graven came on strong the final two weeks of the season to finish the year at .294 with 2 HR, and 13 RBI. Graven had an 11-game hitting streak snapped in the final game of the regular season, but he hit .450 (18-for-40) with 13 runs scored over the 11-game-stretch.

The Navigators finished tied for second in the league in runs scored (198), and their .258 team average was good for third in the NECBL.
