GLOUCESTER: Block party, fireworks, boat parade canceled

At the request of the Coast Guard, Gloucester officials have canceled Saturday night's parade of lights and fireworks over the harbor. The Coast Guard cites the impending storm as a major threat to would-be boaters. According to the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the canceled activities have not been re-scheduled. Friday night's block party had already been canceled. Sunday's schooner race and Celebrate Gloucester are still on. (9/2/10)

Urgent Beach Advisory

Dangerous conditions due to rip tides and undertows persist at Good Harbor and Wingaersheek Beaches in Gloucester. At least one dozen swimmers have been assisted out of the water by lifeguards. Lifeguards are closing all or portions of the beaches at their discretion. In sections that are open, swimmers are required to go no further than waist deep.

The Fire Department and Police Departments have responded to numerous water-related emergencies throughout the day, and police officers are patrolling the beaches in order to enforce the lifeguard orders.

Dangerous conditions are expected through at least tomorrow and are expected to worsen. Swimmers must obey lifeguard and police orders on all public beaches. A safety plan is being put in effect for tomorrow which includes shoreside medical personnel from the Fire Department, police officers for enforcement, and lifeguards in the water to ensure water safety.

If there is no lifeguard on duty in the after hours, residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the water. Conditions are dangerous. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.

For more information, please call Public Properties Manager Mark Cole at 978-423-1797 or Mayor Carolyn Kirk at 978-281-3616.

North Shore Navigators salute the city of Lynn (7/20/10)

JASON BANOS NAMED MVP AS NAVIGATORS SHINE IN ALL-STAR GAME

LYNN, MA (June 19, 2010) – The North Shore Navigators were well-represented at last night's 2010 NECBL All-Star Game in Newport, Rhode Island, as the Eastern Division rolled to a 10-0 victory over the West.

The Navigators' Jason Banos (Columbia University; Lynnfield) was named MVP for his efforts after the NECBL's second leading hitter hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to put the East on top 6-0. Fittingly, Banos participated in the event's Home Run Derby earlier in the afternoon, in which he connected for two home runs. Banos is currently hitting .370 for the season, and has reached base in 19 straight games. He is hitting a remarkable .432 over that span.

The Navigators' five other All-Star selections also made large impacts for the East, a team that was managed by Navs' head coach Jeff Waldron and assistant coaches Eric Pelletier and Steve Coffey.

Matt Avery (Cypress College) started and led off the game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. He singled home a run in the second inning and later singled in the fourth but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Avery (.320) is among the top-ten leaders in batting average.

Tyler Kuehl (Point Loma Nazarene) started at second base for the East and scored a run in the second inning after reaching on a fielder's choice. Kuehl is fourth in the NECBL with 22 RBI.

Nolan Corr (Wheaton College), Crayton Bare (University of Baylor), and Bryant Gauthier (Southern New Hampshire University; Lynn) were the three Navs' pitchers selected to the All-Star roster, as the three combined to pitch the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, allowing no runs on just one hit while facing the minimum nine hitters.

Corr allowed a single to lead off the sixth but induced a double play before a fly out ended the inning. Bare and Gauthier both threw perfect innings in the sixth and seventh, as both struck out one in their lone inning of work.

The East scored four more times in the bottom of the ninth to make it 10-0, as the East pounded out 13 hits on the night. The West, meanwhile, managed just one hit while being shutout by Eastern division pitchers.

Greg Ladd, senior pitcher for the Danvers High School baseball team, led the Falcons to a tie for first place with Gloucester, piling up more than half his team's 14 wins. Winning only 4 games last year, the Falcons beat Gloucester on the last day of the season behind the offerings of Greg to tie for the top spot in the Northeastern Conference's South Division. Ladd went on to pitch the Falcons to a win in the opener of the MIAA baseball tournament to finish his senior season with a perfect 9 - 0 record.
